Australian Dental Industry Advisory Council
Australia’s dental industry faces a number of challenges arising out of changes from the commercial, technical and regulatory environment as a result of international and domestic influences. Assisting the dental industry adjust to these is the role of the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA), the representative body for the manufacturers, importers and suppliers of dental products. To ensure that ADIA is best positioned to support its members, the Dental Industry Advisory Council was formed in late 2010.
The Council meets once or twice each year as needs dictate with at least one meeting being held in Parliament House, Canberra. Key stakeholders are invited to facilitate discussion between Council members, senior regulators and parliamentarians with responsibility for, or an interest in, matters affecting Australia’s dental industry. At its last meeting the Council met with parliamentarians including the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing (the Hon. Catherine King MP), the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Tony Abbott MP) and the Shadow Minister for Heath (the. Hon. Peter Dutton MP).
Over 2012 and 2013 the Dental Industry Advisory Council will consider issues including the international harmonisation of the medical devices regulatory framework, regulations for custom-made dental product, fostering the local manufacturing capacity and the effective monitoring and forecasting of activity within Australia’s dental industry. Naturally, the Council will also respond to initiatives of the Australian Government as the need arises.
The formation of the Council is a key component of the 2010-15 ADIA Strategic Plan which envisages a more active role for the Association in influencing the commercial, technical and regulatory environment in which the dental industry operates.
