Senate Committtee Recommends Reform

A Senate Committee report that recommends an overhaul of regulations governing the importation of dental product has been endorsed by ADIA. The committee has acknowledged that there are problems associated with the importation of medical devices via the internet and that more effective regulation of custom-made dental appliances is needed.

Carbon tax and the dental industry

ADIA is working with the Australian Government to review the impacts of the carbon tax on the manufacture and supply of dental product in Australia. One policy option under response is to exempt synthetic greenhouse gases used in dentistry from the application of an equivalent carbon price.

Australia - New Zealand Therapeutic Products Agency

The Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) is pleased to be working with the Australian government in the development of the proposed Australia-New Zealand Therapeutic Products Agency (ANZTPA). A staged approach focused on medicines, medical devices and biologicals will be adopted in order to establish the requisite building blocks for one regulatory system.

TGA General Manager Farewelled By Dental Industry

ADIA has acknowledged the challenges that Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) faces following the announcement that Mr Rohan Hammett will retire as TGA General Manager. ADIA looks forward to working with Mr Hammett’s successor to ensure that the regulatory framework for the approval of dental product frees industry from an unnecessary regulatory burden.

ADIA Meets Parliament

At a recent meeting of the Australian Dental Industry Advisory Council convened by ADIA, senior industry leaders met at Parliament House, Canberra to review the stategic direction of the industry. Meetings were held with the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing (Catherine King), the Leader of The Opposition (Tony Abbott) and the Shadow Minister for Health (Peter Dutton).

Decision on Therapeutic Product Promotion Gets Tick

The announcement that the Australian Government has endorsed a self-regulatory model for the promotion of therapeutic products has been welcomed by the ADIA. The announcement by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, the Hon. Catherine King MP, was in response to a working group report considering reform to arrangements for the promotion of therapeutic products.

TGA Invites Dental Industry To New Reference Group

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has formed a reference group to provide high-level advice on the proposed reforms to the medical device regulatory framework. The Reference Group is Chaired by Ms Jenny Hefford, TGA Chief Regulatory Officer, and will provide a consultation mechanism between key stakeholders, including ADIA and the TGA on issues relating to the medical devices reforms.

2011 ADIA Research Grant

ADIA is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Yin Xiao from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is the recipient of the ADIA Research Grant. The $7,500 grant supports research to assess the role of hedgehog signaling pathway on cementum repair and regeneration using a rat to model root wound healing.
