Australian Dental Industry Intelligence Report

The dental industry supplies a diverse range of goods and services to dentists and allied oral healthcare professionals.  Although, the value of these goods and services are implicitly included in published data sources, such as the national accounts released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), they are not readily distinguishable because goods and services supplied by the dental industry are not separately identified as an industry in the standard industry classification used by the ABS.

In light of this, the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) commissioned Independent Economics to develop the Australian Dental Industry Intelligence Report.  This report estimates value of products and services, provided by the dental industry to dentists and allied oral healthcare professionals.  It is a useful and credible benchmarking tool for ADIA’s member businesses and is a valuable reference for ADIA’s future consultations with government.  Updated annually, this five-part report provides:

A detailed executive summary of the analysis.

An interpretation of the historical trends in the value of the overall dental industry.

A detailed overview of the dental product categories included in the analysis and presents and interprets the historical trends in the value of products supplied by the dental industry.

An overview of the dental service categories included in the analysis and presents and interprets the historical trends in the value of services supplied by the dental industry.

A brief outline of the methodology used to estimate the value of the products and services supplied by the dental industry.

The Australian Dental Industry Intelligence Report sales data is reported are in current prices and therefore reflect the value of the dental industry in nominal terms.  In other words, the reported values are unadjusted for movement in prices from one year to another (inflation).  As such, the changes in the estimates reported in the following sections come about through a combination of the effects of changes in the quantities of dental products and services and the prices of those products and services.

The data will be updated on an annual basis allowing the development and maintenance of trend data and thus allow ADIA member businesses the opportunity to benchmark their business’s performance against data within theADIA Australian Dental Industry Intelligence Report.  Non-members are not provided with access to the data.

ADIA's partners in development of the ADIA Dental Industry Intelligence Report is Independent Economics, a leading authority on economic modelling widely regarded by industry and government for rigorous, independent analysis.  Their experience includes a recent appointment as economic modelling advisers to the Australian Treasury; and various industry associations for modelling sectors of the Australian economy.

Launched at the ADIA Industry Connect Conference in October 2012, this project has greatly benefitted ADIA member businesses.
