Parliamentary Engagement — Strategy summary

As the peak business organisation representing manufacturers and suppliers of dental products, the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) is a strong advocate for reforms that reduce red tape and lift restrictions which limit flexibility and innovation by business. This often requires ADIA to present the case for reform at a parliamentary level and this is conducted in accordance with the ADIA Parliamentary Engagement & Advocacy Strategy that is summarised below

ADIA recognises that policy advocacy is an ongoing and ever evolving process. Sometimes our work is proactive where ADIA presents to parliament the need for legislative reform. At other times ADIA is reactive where we work to secure amendments to legislation that would negatively impact dental product manufacturers and suppliers.

At all times, our parliamentary engagement is undertaken within the context of our parliamentary engagement strategy in order to achieve the policy objectives set by the ADIA membership.

Parliamentary Engagement Objectives —

Maintain among parliamentarians ADIA’s status as a recognised source of sound advice and guidance.
Achieve the reform objectives set out in the ADIA Advocacy Agenda and policy statements.

The high levels of access to senior parliamentarians that ADIA enjoys and the ability to achieve lasting reform is the product of a considered strategy that views parliamentarians as an important partner as opposed to a third-party stakeholder. Over many years, ADIA has created an environment where there is a shared interest in ensuring that businesses in the dental industry can grow, create jobs and operate sustainably.

Underpinning Parliamentary Engagement Principles —

ADIA is non-partisan and will provide advice that is frank, honest, timely and based on the best available evidence.
ADIA will demonstrate leadership, will be trustworthy, and will act with integrity.
Political donations are made transparently and in accordance with internal controls.

ADIA’s reputation as an effective advocate for reform is the result of a powerful combination of industry experience and advocacy expertise. The practical input of members on commercial, regulatory and technical issues is used by ADIA staff with the political contacts and advocacy expertise to deliver real outcomes for the dental industry.

ADIA’s vision is for an industry that empowers oral health professionals to advance the health and well-being of all Australians. The ADIA Parliamentary Engagement & Advocacy Strategy is part of approach to achieve this vision.

Member Engagement —

ADIA provides leadership, strategy, advocacy and support. Our members set our agenda, fund our activities and directly benefit from the results. The issues that ADIA staff progress progresses at a parliamentary and departmental level are identified by members serving on the ADIA-BAC Business Affairs Committee and the ADIA-DRC Dental Regulation Committee.
