National Energy Guarantee Supports Dental Product Manufacturers

For Immediate Release

― 15 August 2018

Manufacturers and suppliers of innovative dental products depend on access to reliable and affordable energy to grow and create jobs. This is why the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA), the dental industry’s peak business organisation, supports the National Energy Guarantee (NEG) as an important part of Australia’s energy policy mix.

“The National Energy Guarantee will ensure that manufacturers and small businesses in Australia’s dental industry will have reliable access to energy. This security is vital to sustaining the growth of the sector and the creation of jobs,” said Mr Troy Williams, ADIA Chief Executive Officer.

ADIA’s position reflects the advice the Association provided earlier this year in its submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics’ inquiry into barriers to business investment. ADIA highlighted, for example, that intermittent periods of energy unreliability in South Australia cost dental product manufacturers and suppliers thousands of dollars.

“For example, when manufacturers of high-tech medical devices in South Australia experience unplanned power outages it can be an expensive exercise. Manufacturing equipment often can’t just be turned back on, it needs to be cleaned and calibrated before production can recommence,” Mr Williams said.

This example of energy insecurity in South Australia is just one of a number of challenges that manufacturers and suppliers of dental products face. Manufacturers and suppliers of innovative dental products also contend with rising energy costs across the country more broadly. There are growing concerns beyond South Australia associated with energy security.

“ADIA’s advice to government continues to be that the dental industry supports the National Energy Guarantee because it will keep the lights on for Australian businesses that manufacture and supply innovative dental products,” Mr Williams said.

ADIA has also supported the Australian Government’s implementation of the NEG by contributing to the Energy Security Board’s (ESB) consultation on the draft design of the NEG in July of 2018.
