The online retailing behemoth Alibaba has set out its strategy to to significantly expand its presence in Australia, and will open its first local office in Melbourne later this year, as part of its long-term quest to connect two billion consumers with millions of merchants around the world.

The Alibaba Group is a Chinese e-commerce company that provides consumer-to-consumer, business-to-consumer and business-to-business sales services via web portals. This e-commerce colossus processes transactions worth more than US$500million each year and has a strong focus on providing a platform for online B2B commerce.

In early 2016 the company formalised its move to establish an Australian office, tasked with helping local brands tap into the gigantic Chinese market.
