2018 Budget — Dental care expenditure


The 2018 Australian Government Budget provides funding for existing commitments to provide dental and oral healthcare services for eligible adults, children and military veterans.

National Partnership On Public Dental Services For Adults

The Australian Government is providing funding to support the improved oral health of patients who rely on the public dental system.


This funding is provided to state and territory governments that deliver the programs. The allocations for FY2017-18 and FY2018-19 have yet to be finalised.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule

The Australian Government is supporting eligible children to access essential dental health services through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). The percentage of eligible children accessing the CDBS is as follows:

The budget papers indicate that during the course of the coming year the Australian Government will undertake a statutory review of the Dental Benefits Act 2008.

Department of Veterans Affairs

The Australian Government funds access to general and specialist medical and dental services to Department of Veterans Affairs clients. The budget papers indicate the following expenditure:

The budget papers refer to an initiative to update DVA’s dental and allied health arrangements to a more contemporary, efficient standard with a greater range of services for cardholders.

Royal Flying Doctor Service —

The Government has expanded health care across country Australia, announcing a commitment of $330 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS). The four year funding will include $20 million in new funding for fly and drive dental services.

This update was issued on 8 May 2018 and please note that changes in circumstances after the publication of material or information may impact upon its accuracy (including passage of the supporting legislation through the parliament) and compliance obligations.
