2018 Budget — Medical Industry Growth Plan

.

The Australian Government will invest $1.3 billion in a Health and Medical Industry Growth Plan to deliver better treatment outcomes, create jobs, and drive growth in new firms and industries through research.

It will provide an estimated 28,000 new jobs, provide for a minimum of 130 new clinical trials, and add a 50 per cent increase in exports, new markets and global market leadership in biotechnology, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals.

Research investments include $240 million over 4 years for a Frontier Health and Medical Research program and $94 million over four years for industry research collaborations, and biomedical and medical technology programs. This includes a Biomedical Translation Bridge which will invest $22.3 million over five years to target early and innovative ideas from research pipeline to proof-of-concept, translation, and commercialisation.

A $32 million Industry Research Exchange and Training program will foster a collaboration between industry and academia. Researchers will be supported to work with industry to benefit career progression and increase focus on end user needs, entrepreneurialism, and the commercialisation of research.

The Government will also provide $30 million to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare to improve accessibility to health information and statistics and $20 million to support the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board.

The measure will cost $1.3 billion over 10 years from 2017-18.
