Statistics — Practice Business Survey

To allow dentists to better understand the sentiment on current business conditions and future expectations across dental practices in their state/territory and nation-wide, the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) in conjunction with Bite Magazine compiles the ADIA Bite Magazine Dental Practice Business Conditions Survey. Undertaken on a quarterly basis, the survey's results produce key indicators that assess the commercial environment in which dental practices across Australia operate.

The ADIA Bite Magazine Dental Practice Business Conditions Survey is produced using feedback from individual dental practices across Australia. It reviews current business conditions and future expectations on a quarterly basis across a number of key indicators including an increase/decrease in:

Current conditions and future expectations for

  • The number of patients seen;
  • The number of (new) patients seen for the first time;
  • The number of patients funded by government programs; and
  • Vacant chair time.

The survey methodology provides index figures for each of the above referenced categories, with an index level of 50 indicating that there is an exact balance of sentiment between those who responded that the variable had grown and those who replied that the variable had declined. Thus, any level below 50 can generally be interpreted as meaning that the variable is falling, and conversely, a reading above 50 indicates the variable is increasing. This approach is used to determine the business conditions index for the previous quarter and also the business expectations for the coming quarter.
